Locus blind spot

lee van cleef
Locus left important collections by Chesya Burke and Livia Llewellyn off its annual reading list. That's a travesty. These are two brilliant and daring authors who've written collections that are  tough, ambitious, and truly horrific. They deserve far better than a snub from the industry trade journal.

Having written an intro to one and reviewed the other, I'll leave it there. However, I encourage everyone to go get these books and if you enjoy them, write Burke and Llewellyn onto the Locus Poll when it opens.

Do you think it's anti-horror bias coming into play?

Yes. Of course. I was the only person who knows horror who was on the "panel" of recommenders and the way it works is that more than one person has to rec something to make the cut. I had to push very hard to get ANY horror on the list in any category.

It is really a sorry state of affairs when a trade journal refuses to cover certain aspects of the TRADE. We at Hadley Rille Books are stinging a bit tool, being constantly ignored despite earning (GOOD!) reviews in big venues like Publisher's Weekly and Library Journal. I imagine they feel a line must be drawn someplace...why, when there's great work happening outside of the big houses?

Meh...

I think Locus lost pretty much any coverage/featuring of horror (other than the occasional 'dedicated to' issue)when Ed Bryant stopped reviewing for them. I'm pretty certain his departure was for health reasons. But they never hired anyone to take up the slack, and it's been a far-less interesting magazine since.

It's an unfortunate oversight, is all I can say.

Not so Jeff. Stefan Dziemianowicz covers horror for them now.

Engines of Desire best of the year, I reckon.
